The Messenger is one of my favorite 2D platformers because of the amount of aggressive action required to traverse the world. The game pushes you into unsafe situations to progress and I wanted to capture that in a 3D setting. My favorite First-Person Shooter games always have good movement mechanics but none have the traversal mechanics like The Messenger. For Harbinger, I brought these ideas together to make a movement system dependent on shooting different targets. I had a lot of fun playtesting this game but only when I showed it to others did I realize that people were confused by the core gameplay. This game would benefit a lot from just a little more sound and visual design to indicate that the player is jumping. When the players had their hands on the controller, the gameplay clicked instantly. With some more work, this game could have more unique movement interactions with different enemy types and a more intentional level design.

Harbinger

This game was made in 48 hours for the Mix and Game Jam. The theme was Dimension Switch where we had to take a mechanic from a 2D game and turn it into a 3D game or vice versa. I took the “hit an enemy to refresh your jump” mechanic from The Messenger and turned it into a Doom-like platform shooter. Shooting green objects (other than projectiles) refreshes your jump. Getting hit by an enemy will disable your gun for a couple of seconds.
